When You're Too Flooded to Think Straight: A DBT Approach
What emotional flooding is, why it shuts down productive conversation, and how to regulate before you say something you'll regret
You're in the middle of an argument and suddenly you can't think clearly. Your heart is racing, your chest is tight, and everything your partner says sounds like an attack. This is emotional flooding — and it's physiological, not a character flaw.
When flooded, your heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute and your body enters a fight-or-flight state. The prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain responsible for empathy, problem-solving, and nuanced communication — goes offline. You literally cannot have a productive conversation in this state.
